Richard "Rick" Mitchell graduated from Kermit High School in 1996 and initially worked in the oil field before enlisting in the United States Army in March 1999. At the age of 21, his decision to serve was influenced by a deep sense of duty, as he was the only member of his immediate family, other than his grandfather who served in both the Korean and Vietnam War and retired in 1977, to join the military.
Reflecting on his service with pride and gratitude, over the course of his military career, Rick quickly advanced from the rank of Private to Sergeant in just three years. He also served as an Apache Helicopter Crew Chief, stationed with the 1st Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. In 2003, Rick deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and returned home in 2006.
In October 2021, while searching for a location to host a truck show in memory of his son, he came across our Post and decided to join. Every year he has continued to host The Brantley Memorial Truck Show here. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career. having held nearly every position, in 2022 he became a Trustee by 2023, he advanced to Jr. Vice Commander, and soon after he was appointed his current title, our Post Commander. Under his leadership, our Post has seen remarkable achievements, including becoming an All-State, All-American Post, and ranking in the top 15 in the state.
Rick is also currently serving as the Sr. Vice Commander for our District (25). He believes that "Life is too short to make it tough.” and his infectious positivity and sense of humor have made him a beloved figure within the post. He is known for his commitment to his family, 4732 members and our Odessa, Tx community, always bringing a smile and laughter to those around him.
As dedicated family man, Rick is the proud father of three children and has 14 bonus kids, all while enjoying 24 years of marriage to his beautiful wife. His leadership, compassion, and sense of humor continue to be a driving force within the post, and his legacy of service is felt by all who know him.
